Following the announcement by the Prime Minster on 14th June, meetings of the Council and Committees have been cancelled and the office will not re-open until 19th July (or earlier if restrictions are lifted). Staff are working from home, but council services and normal business is still being conducted. Extraordinary Meetings will take place if required to approve statutory or urgent business.
Former Councillor and Chairman – Anthony Hunter
In mid-June we received the sad news that Antony Hunter had passed away, aged 76.
After he retired from a career in banking, he stood for election to Hook Parish Council in 1999. He served for 12 years, during which time he was Chairman of the Planning Committee, and the also Council Chairman from 2004 to 2008. He always conducted himself in a gentlemanly manner and colleagues have commented that he was a joy to work.
One former, longstanding councillor, Jane Bonnin remembers him as “an active councillor and a very skilful and effective chairman. He was always extremely well prepared and facilitated well controlled debate with unfailing good humour. He was instrumental in streamlining Council meetings and many processes during his chairmanship. We both got a lot of satisfaction (and fun) whilst meeting the challenges of the moment together”.
Jane’s comments have been mirrored by other staff and Councillors who worked with Antony, who is pictured with Jane Bonnin, receiving an award for the Parish Council’s website in 2007. The award is still part of a collection of on display in the office.
His loss will be felt, not only to his wife and family, but the many people and organisations in Hook, with whom he was involved since moving here in 1978. These include the Hook Focus Magazine and Hook Players, where he could often be found front of House and Box Office Manager.
After 20 years at the helm, Anne Atkins, Executive Officer to the Parish Council is retiring. During her tenure, she has guided the Councillors and staff through an ever changing range of activities and projects. She has been instrumental in shaping the day to day operations of the Council as Hook has evolved and grown. She has done so with good humour, endless patience, wisdom, and resilience. She will be much missed by her colleagues and Councillors.
On 19th July, Sarah Dignan will be welcomed as the new Clerk. She is joining us in good time to enable a thorough handover from Anne. Sarah has been Clerk at Windlesham Parish Council for the last 5 years and brings a wide range of experience with her.
Outdoor Gym and Play Equipment
With the warmer weather arriving, many residents have asked about when the outdoor gym and play parks will be fully open. As soon as covid restrictions on social distancing are lifted, the outdoor gym and the play equipment will be reinstated, including the surfacing to the outdoor gym.
