Local Police update and how to secure your home

Please see below update from the Local Police about how to keep your home safe. Register your valuables with the national tagging service called Immobilise (https://www.immobilise.com/) which assist Police in returning your property back to you should anything be stolen and it is subsequently recovered.

The Neighbourhood Watch website also has a lot of helpful information https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/crime-prevention/crime-prevention-toolkits/burglaries/burglary-prevention-toolkit

If you are vulnerable due to age (over 65), circumstance, disabled, or a victim of household crime then The Bobby Scheme is free and should be able to assist you in securing your home. Go to http://bluelamptrust.org.uk/bobby-scheme-landingpage/ for more information.

Update from Local Police:

Good evening everybody,

We have recently seen a series of Residential Burglaries in the Hart District and I would like to offer some crime prevention advice to reduce the likely hood of residents falling victim to any further incidents.

  • Check your insurance documents for any specific security requirements or upgrades.
  • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.
  • Ensure rear fencing is in good repair.
  • Lock all windows and doors, remembering to double lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn key)
  • Keep all keys out of reach and sight from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through letterbox).
  • All windows should be fitted with key-operated locks. You are able to buy DIY locks for almost every type of window. If you are considering replacing any or all of your windows check they conform to BS7950 Windows of Enhanced Security.
  • Do not leave ladders and garden tools in your garden, lock them away in your shed.
  • Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges.
  • Consider fitting security lighting and a burglar alarm.
  • Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free with http://orlo.uk/7L9S0
  • Make use of timer switches to make the property appear occupied.
  • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property.
  • Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
  • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows.
  • Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault.

Report suspicious activity to the police on 101 or online at http://orlo.uk/ctYJz or you can report anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
